The Clinical Utility of Somatosensory Evoked Potentials

Abstract
Although somatosensory evoked potential have been utilized as an useful diagnostic tools in evaluating the wide variety of pathological conditions, their neural generaor is still unknown. In somatosensory evoked potential, electrode locations are based on two principles: (1) the waveforms are best recorded from electrode sites on the body surface closet to the presumed generator along the SSEP pathway and (2) studies of potential field distribution of each waveform of interest dictate the best techques to be used. Particularly, to utilize the SSEP appropriatly, we need to unstand the concepts of near field potentials(NFPs) and far field potentials(FFPs). Precise understanding this facts provide an adequate basis utilizing SSEPs for numorous clinical purposes.
